PSALM 31
A Psalm of David
1 In you, great Jehovah, I take refuge; may I never be put to shame. Deliver me in your righteousness. 2 Bow down your ear to me; and deliver me speedily. Be my strong rock, a house of defense to save me. 3 For you are my rock and fortress. So for your name's sake lead me and guide me. 4 Pluck me out of the net they laid secretly for me; for you are my stronghold. 5 Into your hands I commit my spirit. You have redeemed me, dear Jehovah, you are my God of truth. 6 I hate them who honor liars; but I trust in Jehovah. 7 I will be glad and rejoice in your lovingkindness; for you saw my afflictions. You know my soul is in adversity; 8 and you have not given me over to the hand of the enemy. You have put my feet in a large place. 9 Have mercy on me, great Jehovah, for I am in distress. My eye wastes away with grief, yes, my soul and my body. 10 For my life is spent with sorrow, and my years with sighing. My strength fails because of my iniquity, and my bones are wasted away. 11 Because of all my adversaries I have become a reproach, yes, very much so to my neighbors, and a cause of fear to all my acquaintances. They who saw me outside ran from me. 12 I am forgotten as a dead man, removed from their thoughts: I am like a broken vessel. 13 For I have heard the slander of many, terror on every side. They took counsel together against me, and they devised to take away my life. 14 But I trusted in you, great Jehovah. I said, You are my God. 15 My times are in your hand: Deliver me from the hands of my enemies, and from them who persecute me. 16 Make your face shine on your servant, save me in your lovingkindness. 17 May I never be put to shame, dear Jehovah; for I have called out to you. Shame the wicked, silence them in Sheol. 18 Dumb their lying lips, they speak against the righteous insolently, they speak with pride and contempt. 19 Your goodness is great, that you have laid up for them who fear you! You have done this for people who take refuge in you, before the eyes of the sons of men! 20 In the secret of your presence you hide them from the plotting of man. You keep them secretly in a tent, under a cover from the strife of tongues. 21 Blessed be Jehovah; he has shown me his marvelous lovingkindness, he is a strong city. 22 As for me, I said without thoughtfulness, I am cut off from before your eyes. Nevertheless you heard the voice of my pain when I cried out to you. 23 Please love Jehovah, all you his saints. Jehovah preserves the faithful, he plentifully deals punishment to the proud. 24 Be strong, and let your heart take courage, all you that hope in Jehovah.
Psalm 32
A Psalm of David
1 Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. 2 Blessed is the man Jehovah does not see as guilty, and in whose spirit there is no deceit. 3 When I kept silent, my bones wasted away, through my groaning all day long. 4 For day and night your hand was heavy on me. My moisture was dried up as with the drought of summer heat. 5 I acknowledged my sin to you, and my iniquity I did not hide. I said, I will confess my transgressions to Jehovah; and you forgave the iniquity of my sin. Stop and mediate, praise, him who lives forever. Stop and mediate, praise, him who lives forever. 6 For this let every one who is godly pray to you in a time when you are able to be found. Surely when the great waters overflow they cannot reach him who prays. 7 You are my hiding place; you will preserve me from trouble; you surround me all around with songs of deliverance. 8 I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go. I counsel you with my eye watching you. 9 Do not be as the horse, or as the mule, which have no understanding in them; their trappings are a bit and bridle to hold them in, otherwise they would not come close to you. 10 Many sorrows are for the wicked; but he who trusts in Jehovah, for him, lovingkindness will surround him all about. 11 Be glad in Jehovah, and rejoice, all you who are righteous; shout for joy, all you who are upright in heart.
Psalm 33
1 Rejoice in Jehovah, righteous, praise is good for the upright. 2 Give thanks to Jehovah with the harp. Sing praises to him with the ten stringed instrument. 3 Sing to him a new song. Play skillfully a loud noise. 4 For the word of Jehovah is right; and all his work is finished in faithfulness. 5 He loves righteousness and justice. The earth is full of the lovingkindness of Jehovah. 6 By the word of Jehovah the heavens were made, and all the host of them formed by the breath of his mouth. 7 He gathered the waters of the sea together as a heap. He laid up the deeps in store houses. 8 Let all the earth fear Jehovah. Let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him. 9 For he spoke, and it was done. He commanded, and it stood for all time. 10 Jehovah brings the counsel of the nations to nothing. He makes thoughts of people to be of no effect. 11 The counsel of Jehovah stands good for ever, The thoughts of his heart to each and all generations. 12 Blessed is the nation whose God is Jehovah, the people he has chosen for his own inheritance. 13 Jehovah looks down from heaven; he sees all the sons of men. 14 From his throne he looks out on all the inhabitants of the earth. 15 He who fashioned the hearts of them all, he considers all their works. 16 There is no king saved by the multitude of an army, a mighty man is not delivered by his own great strength. 17 A horse is meaningless for safety; neither can it deliver any by its great power. 18 Behold, the eye of Jehovah is on people who fear him, on all who hope in his lovingkindness. 19 To deliver their soul from death, and keep them alive in famine. 20 Our soul has waited for Jehovah, he is our help and shield. 21 For our heart rejoices in him, because we have trusted in his holy name. 22 Let your lovingkindness, dear Jehovah, be with us, according to how we hope in you.
Psalm 34
A psalm of David. When David changed his behaviour because Abimelech drove him away in the uprising rebellion.
1 I will bless Jehovah at all times. His praise is continually in my mouth. 2 My soul boasts in Jehovah. The meek will hear, and be glad. 3 Magnify Jehovah with me, and let us exalt his name together. 4 I looked for Jehovah, and he answered me. He delivered me from all my fears. 5 They looked to him, and were radiant; their faces shall never be confounded. 6 This poor man cried, and Jehovah heard, he saved him out of all his troubles. 7 The angel of Jehovah encamps around the people who fear him, and he delivers them. 8 Taste and see Jehovah is good. Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him. 9 All saints, fear Jehovah; for there is no lack for them with fear of him. 10 The young lions suffer hunger through scarcity; but those who seek Jehovah never want for any good thing. 11 Come, children, hear me. I will teach you the fear of Jehovah. 12 Who is the man that loves life, and desires many days, that he will see good? 13 Keep your tongue from evil, and your lips from speaking lies. 14 Depart from evil, and do good. Seek peace, and pursue it. 15 The eyes of Jehovah are towards the righteous, his ears are open for their cries. 16 The face of Jehovah is against evil people, he will cut off the memory of them from the earth. 17 The righteous cried, and Jehovah heard. He delivered them from all their troubles. 18 Jehovah is near to the man with a broken heart, and saves the one with a contrite spirit. 19 Many are the afflictions of the righteous; but Jehovah delivers from them all. 20 He keeps all his bones safe, not one of them is broken. 21 Evil kills the wicked; and all who hate the righteous are condemned. 22 Jehovah redeems the souls of his servants; none of them who take refuge in him can be condemned.
Psalm 35
A psalm of David.
1 Strive, great Jehovah, with all people who strive with me. Fight against these enemies who fight against me. 2 Take hold of your mighty shield and buckler, stand up and be my help. 3 Also draw out your spear, and bar the way for those who are in pursuit of me. Speak to my soul the words, I am your salvation. 4 Put to shame and bring to dishonor the people who seek after my soul. Turn them back in confusion who plan my hurt. 5 Make them like chaff before the wind. The angel of Jehovah drive them. 6 Make their way dark and slippery. Send the angel of Jehovah to pursue them. 7 For without cause they hid their net in a pit, for my harm. Without cause they dug a pit for my soul. 8 Destruction comes on him without knowing; and the net he hid catches himself. With destruction cause him to fall in. 9 Then my soul will rejoice in Jehovah. It shall forever be joyful in his salvation. 10 All my bones say, Jehovah, who is like you? Who delivers the poor from the strong, yes, the poor and the needy from the violent robber? 11 Unrighteous witnesses rise up. They ask me about things I don’t know. 12 They reward me evil for my good, they kill my soul. 13 But as for me, when they were sick, my clothing was sackcloth. I afflicted my soul in fasting; my prayer returned back to my own heart. 14 I behaved as though it had been my close friend or brother. I bowed down in mourning, as one who laments his own mother. 15 But in my personal adversity they rejoiced, they gathered themselves together like a troop. The haters gathered against me like storm clouds, I was not aware. They tore me up, and would not stop. 16 As profane mockers of feasts, they gnashed on me with their teeth. 17 Lord, how long will you watch on? Rescue my soul from this destruction, your beloved darling from the lions’ jaws. 18 I will give you thanks among the great assembly, I will praise you before many people. 19 I pray my enemies never get to wrongfully rejoice over me. Neither allow them to wink their eye in hate of me without cause. 20 No peace comes from their speech; only deceitful words issue forth against the quiet of this land. 21 Yes, they open their mouth wide against me. They say, Aha, aha, our eye has seen it. 22 But you have seen this, dear Jehovah; do not keep silent. Lord, be not far from me. 23 Stir up yourself, awake to justice due me. My God and my Lord, be united to my cause. 24 Judge for me, great Jehovah my God, act in accordance to your righteousness. Do not allow them to rejoice over me. 25 So they cannot say in their heart, Aha, this is what we will do. They want to say, We have swallowed him up. 26 Instead may they themselves together be put to shame, confused and stopped, the ones who rejoice at my harm. Clothe them with shame and dishonor, who magnify their souls against mine. 27 Those who favor my righteous cause, let them be rewarded, then they can shout for joy and be glad. Yes, may it continually be said, Jehovah is greatly magnified. God takes pleasure in the prosperity of his servant. 28 My tongue talks of your righteousness and your praises all the day long.
Psalm 36
A psalm of David, the servant of Jehovah.
1 The transgressions and accusations of the wicked whisper within my heart, There is no fear of God in him. 2 He flatters himself in his own eyes, His iniquity will not be found out and hated. 3 The words of his mouth are sinful and deceit. He has ceased to be wise and do good. 4 He thought up and conspired iniquity in his own bed; He positions himself on a path that is not good; he does not abhor evil. 5 Your lovingkindness, dear Jehovah, is in the heavens; your faithfulness reaches into the skies. 6 Your righteousness is like the mountains of God; your judgments are a great deep. Great Jehovah, you preserve both man and beast. 7 How precious is your lovingkindness, God! The children of men take refuge under the shadow of your wings. 8 They are abundantly satisfied with the fullness found in your house; you will cause them to drink and be refreshed from the river of your pleasures. 9 For with you is the fountain of life. In your light we see light. 10 Continue your lovingkindness for the people who know you, and your righteousness for the upright in heart. 11 Do not allow the foot of pride to stride against me, and do not give place so the hand of the wicked can drive me away. 12 Workers of iniquity fall down, they are thrust down, and cannot rise.
Psalm 37
A psalm of David.
1 Do not fret because of evil people, neither be envious of any who work unrighteousness. 2 They will soon be cut down like the grass, and wither as the green herb. 3 Trust in Jehovah, and do good. Live well in the land, and feed on his faithfulness. 4 Delight yourself in Jehovah, and he will grant you the desires of your heart. 5 Commit your ways to Jehovah; trust also in him, and he will bring it to pass. 6 He makes your righteousness bright, illuminating outwards as the light, and your justice appear as the noon day sun. 7 Rest in Jehovah, and wait patiently on him. Do not fret yourself because of the man who prospers in his way, the man who brings wicked instruments to pass. 8 Cease from anger, and turn away from wrath. Do not be afraid, it leads only to acting out evil plans, and resulting in destruction. 9 For those who live out evil will be cut off; but those waiting on Jehovah, inherit the land. 10 After just a little while, the wicked will no longer be. Yes, you will sincerely seriously consider his place, and he shall no longer be. 11 But the meek will inherit the land, and will be delighted in the abundance of peace. 12 The wicked plot against the just, they gnash at him with their teeth. 13 The Lord laughs at the wicked; he sees the day of their destruction is coming on the horizon. 14 The wicked have drawn out the sword, and have bent their bow. They cast down the poor and needy, they kill any who are upright in the way of God. 15 But God causes their sword to enter into their own heart, and their bows are smashed in two. 16 Better is the little the righteous have than the abundance of many wicked. 17 For the arms of the wicked will be smashed; but Jehovah upholds the righteous with his love. 18 Jehovah knows all the days of the perfect; he makes their inheritance last for ever. 19 They will not be put to shame in the testing time of evil; and in the days of famine they will still know the taste of satisfaction. 20 The wicked perish, all enemies of Jehovah are as the fat of lambs. They consume; and in smoke they will consume until vapored away. 21 The wicked borrow, and do not repay their debt again; but the righteous deal graciously, and give. 22 For those who are blessed of him inherit the land; but the ones who are cursed of him are cut off. 23 A man's goings and wanderings are established and directed by Jehovah; God delights in his way. 24 Though he falls, he cannot be utterly cast down; for Jehovah upholds him with his hand. 25 I have been young, and now am old; yet in all that time I have never seen the righteous forsaken, nor his offspring begging for bread. 26 All the day long the righteous deals graciously, and lends; his descendants are blessed. 27 Depart from evil, and do what is good; and live for evermore. 28 Jehovah loves justice, and never forsakes his friends. They are preserved for ever. But the future generations of the wicked are cut off. 29 The righteous inherit the land, and live there for ever. 30 The words of the righteous talk of wisdom, and his tongue speaks justice. 31 The law of his God lives in his heart; none of his steps slide. 32 The wicked watches the righteous, he seeks to kill and devour him. 33 Heaven will not let go off the righteous from his hand, nor condemn him in judgement. 34 Wait for Jehovah, and keep his ways, for he will exalt you, promote you and lift you up to inherit the land. When the wicked are cut off, you will see it. 35 I have seen the wicked in great power, spreading like a green tree in its native soil. 36 But someone passed by, and, behold, in a moment then he was not, the wicked was gone. Yes, I looked for him, but he could not be found. 37 Mark the perfect man, and see, notice the upright. For there is a truly happy end for the man of peace. 38 As for transgressors, they are destroyed together; the end of the wicked is for them to be cut off. 39 But the salvation of the righteous is from our God Jehovah; it is he who is their stronghold in the time of trouble. 40 It is Jehovah who helps them, and rescues them. He rescues them from the wicked, he saves them, because they have taken refuge in him.
Psalm 38
A psalm David remembers.
1 Jehovah, do not rebuke me in your wrath; neither discipline me in your hot displeasure. 2 For your arrows stick fast in me, and your hand presses me hard. 3 There is no wellness in my body because of your indignation; there is also no health in my bones because of my sin. 4 For my iniquities are stacked up high above my head. As a heavy burden they are too heavy for me to carry. 5 My wounds are loathsome and corrupt, because of my own foolishness. 6 I am in pain and bowed down low; I mourn all the day long. 7 My loins are filled with burning; and there is no wellness in my body. 8 I am exhausted and bruised. I have groaned because of the unhappiness of my heart. 9 Lord, all my desires are before you; my groaning is not hidden from your sight. 10 My heart throbs, my strength drains away from me. The light of my eyes is also departed from me. 11 My lovers and friends stand afar off from me, like I have a plague; and my closest stay at a distance. 12 The people also who seek my life lay snares for me; and those seeking my hurt speak mischievous things. They are a people who meditate their minds on deceit all the day long. 13 But I am as a deaf man, and won’t hear. I am as a dumb man who cannot open his mouth. 14 Yes, I am a man who does not hear, in my mouth there are no vile things. 15 For in you, great Jehovah, I hope. You answer, dear Lord my God. 16 For I said, They will rejoice over me if my foot slips, and then they will elevate themselves to destroy me. 17 For I am ready to fall, and my sorrow continually haunts me. 18 I will declare my iniquities; I will be deeply apologetic for my sin. 19 But my enemies are actively energetic, and strong; these enemies are the ones who hate me with wrong heart motivation, and are continually greatly multiplying and amassing against me as a mob. 20 A people reared to render evil for good are adversaries encamped against me, this is because I follow the thing which is good. 21 Never forsake me, dear Jehovah, my holy God, and do not leave me. 22 With great speed come to help me, Lord, you are my salvation.
Psalm 39
A psalm of David.
1 I said, I will be careful of my ways, so that I do not sin with my tongue. I will keep my mouth quiet with a bridle, when the wicked are before me. 2 I was dumb with silence, I held my peace, even from good. My sorrow was stirred. 3 My heart was hot inside me; when I was thinking the fire burned. Then I spoke with my tongue: 4 Jehovah, cause me to know my end, the measure of my days. What my life is; and let me know how frail I am. 5 See, you have made my days as small as the width of my hand; and my lifetime is as nothing before you. Surely every man at his best is only vanity. 6 Surely every man walks in a vain way. Surely they are uncomfortable in vain. He heaps up riches, and does not know or understand who will get them. 7 Now, Lord, what am I waiting for? My hope is in you. 8 Deliver me from all my transgressions. May the foolish not find a way to torment me. 9 I was dumb, and would not open my mouth; because you caused it. 10 Remove your heavy hand away from me. I am consumed by the blow of your hand. 11 When you correct man for sin with your rebuke, you cause his beauty to disappear away like a moth. Surely every man is vanity. 12 Hear my prayer, great Jehovah, listen to my cry. Do not be unresponsive to my many tears. I am a stranger with you, a temporary resident, as all my fathers were before me. 13 Spare me, so that I may recover strength, before I go from here, and am no more.
Psalm 40
A psalm of David.
1 I waited patiently on Jehovah; and he inclined his heart to me, he heard my cry. 2 He also brought me up out of a horrible pit, out of miry clay. He set my feet on a rock, and protected my days. 3 He has put a new song in my mouth, praise only to our God. Many will see it, and fear. They will trust in Jehovah. 4 The man who trusts Jehovah is blessed. He does not respect the proud, nor any who turn aside after lies. 5 Many, great Jehovah my God, are the wonderful works you have done, your thoughts directed towards us cannot be counted and structured before you. If I declared and spoke of them, they are more than I am able to number. 6 Sacrifice and offering you have no delight in; you have opened my ears to your ways. Burnt offerings and sin offerings you don’t ask for. 7 Then I said, Look, I have come. In the scroll of the book it is written of me. 8 I delight to do your will, my dear God. Yes, your law is inside of my heart. 9 I have proclaimed good messages of righteousness in the great assembly. Look, I will not stop my lips from speaking, great Jehovah. You know all things. 10 I have not hidden your righteousness away within my heart; but I have declared your faithfulness and salvation. I have not concealed your lovingkindness and truth from the great assembling. 11 Do not withhold your tender mercies from me, great Jehovah; but may your lovingkindness and pure truth continually preserve me. 12 For innumerable evils have surrounded me all around. My iniquities overtook me, so I am no longer able to look up anymore. They are more than the hairs of my head; and my heart fails me. 13 Be pleased, great Jehovah, to deliver me, speedily come to help me, great Jehovah. 14 All who seek after my soul to destroy me, put them to shame and cause confused panic. Push them far backwards and dishonor them who have delighted to hurt me. 15 May you desolate them in their shame, the ones who mock, Aha, aha! 16 All those seeking you rejoice with gladness in you. Jehovah is magnified, is continually said by those who love God’s salvation. 17 But I am poor and needy; yet still the Lord thinks of me. You are my help and my deliverer. Don’t tarry please, my precious God.
Psalm 41
A psalm of David.
1 Blessed is the one who considers the poor: Jehovah will deliver him in his day of evil. 2 Jehovah will preserve and keep him alive. That man will be blessed in the earth. Do not deliver him over to the will of his enemies. 3 Jehovah will be a support to him on his bed of suffering. You give him rest in his sickness. 4 I said, great Jehovah, have mercy on me. Please heal my soul; for I have sinned against you. 5 My enemies speak only evil against me, saying, When will he die, and his name perish? 6 They come to see me, under false pretences and speak only lies. Then after he leaves, wherever he goes, his heart keeps sinning against me and he continues to gossip. 7 All who hate me whisper together against me. They whisper against me to give me pain. 8 An evil disease, they say, clings to him. Now he is down he will not be able to rise up again. 9 Yes, my own close friend, in who I trusted, he ate my bread, and he lifted his heel up against me. 10 But you, dear Jehovah, show mercy on me, and raise me up, so I can return on them what they did to me. 11 By this I know you delight in me, because my enemy has not triumphed over me. 12 As for me, it is you who upholds me in my integrity, and positions me before your face for ever. 13 Blessed is Jehovah, the God of Israel, even from everlasting and to everlasting. Amen, and Amen.
