PSALMS

Psalm 1

1 Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked. Who does not stand in the way of sinners, or sit in the seat of scoffers. 2 But his delight is in the law of Jehovah; and on his law he meditates day and night. 3 He shall be like a tree planted by the streams of water, that brings forth fruit in its season. Whose leaf does not wither; and whatever he does prospers. 4 The wicked are not like this, they are like chaff the wind blows away. 5 Therefore the wicked cannot stand in the judgment, or sinners in the congregation of the righteous. 6 For Jehovah knows the way of the righteous; but the way of the wicked will perish.

Psalm 2

Why do the nations rage, and the people meditate a foolish thing? 2 The kings of the earth position themselves, and the rulers counsel together, against Jehovah, and against his anointed. They say, 3 Let us break their bonds asunder, and cast away their cords from off us. 4 He who sits in the heavens laughs. The Lord puts them in derision. 5 Then he speaks to them in his wrath, and he vexes them in his severe displeasure. 6 Yet I have set my king up in my holy hill of Zion. 7 I will tell of the decree: Jehovah told to me. He said, You are my son. This day I have begotten you. 8 Ask of me it, and I will give you the nations as your inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth as your possession. 9 You will break them with a rod of iron. You will dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel. 10 Now therefore be wise, you kings: Be instructed, you judges of the earth. 11 Serve Jehovah with fear, and rejoice before him with trembling. 12 Kiss the son, lest he be angry, and you perish in the way. For his wrath will soon be kindled. Blessed are all they who take refuge in him.

Psalm 3

Jehovah, my adversaries have vastly increased! Many are they who rise up against me. 2 There are many who say of my soul, There is no help for him in God. 3 But you, great Jehovah, are a shield around me. My glory and the lifter up of my head. 4 I cry to Jehovah with my voice, he answers me out of his holy hill. 5 I lay down and sleep; then I awake; for Jehovah sustains me. 6 I will not be afraid of ten thousands of the people who set themselves against me all around. 7 Arise, dear Jehovah; save me, my great God: For you have struck all my enemies on the cheek bone. You have broken the teeth of the wicked. 8 Salvation belongs to Jehovah: Your blessing be on your people.

Psalm 4

Answer me when I call, dear God of my righteousness. You saved me when I was in great distress: Have mercy on me, and hear my prayer. 2 You sons of men, how long shall my glory be turned into dishonor? How long will you love vanity, and seek after falsehood? 3 But know this, Jehovah has set apart for himself him what is godly. Jehovah will hear when I call to him. 4 Stand in awe, and sin not: Commune with your own heart on your bed, and be still. 5 Offer the sacrifices of righteousness, and put your trust in Jehovah. 6 Many are they who say, Who will be good to us? Jehovah, lift up the light of your countenance on us. 7 You have put gladness in my heart, more joy than people have when their grain and new wines are increased. 8 In peace, I will both lay down and sleep; for you, Jehovah, alone cause me to dwell in safety.

Psalm 5

1 Listen to my words, great Jehovah. Consider my meditations. 2 Hearken to the voice of my cry, my King, and my God. For to you do I pray. 3 Jehovah, in the morning you will hear my voice. In the morning I will offer my prayer to you, and I will keep watch. 4 For you are not a God who takes pleasure in wickedness: Evil cannot live with you. 5 The arrogant don’t stay standing in your sight: You hate all workers of iniquity. 6 You destroy them who speak lies. Jehovah abhors the blood thirsty and deceitful man. 7 But as for me, in the abundance of your lovingkindness I will come into your house. In your fear I will worship towards your holy temple. 8 Lead me, great Jehovah, in your righteousness because of my enemies; make your way straight before me. 9 For there is no faithfulness in their mouth; their inward life is wickedness itself. Their throat is an open grave; they flatter with their tongue. 10 Hold them guilty, God. Let them fall by their own counsels; thrust them down in the multitude of their transgressions; for against you they have rebelled. 11 But let all those who take refuge in you rejoice. Let them forever shout with joy, because you defend them. Let them also who love your name be joyful in you. 12 For you bless the righteous; dear Jehovah, you compass him about with favor as with a shield.

Psalm 6

Jehovah, do not rebuke me in your anger. Neither chasten me in your hot displeasure. 2 Have mercy on me, Jehovah; for I am withered away. Dear Jehovah, heal me; for my bones are troubled. 3 My soul also is severely troubled. Jehovah, how long? 4 Return, great Jehovah, and deliver my soul: Save me for your lovingkindness' sake. 5 For in death no one remembers you: In Sheol who will give you thanks? 6 I am weary with my groaning. Every night I make my bed swim; I water my couch with tears. 7 My eye wastes away because of grief; it waxes old because of all my adversaries. 8 Depart from me, all you workers of iniquity; for Jehovah has heard the voice of my weeping. 9 Jehovah has heard my supplication; Jehovah will receive my prayer. 10 All my enemies will be put to shame and severely troubled. They will turn back, they will be put to shame suddenly.

Psalm 7

Jehovah my God, in you I take refuge: Save me from all they who pursue me, and deliver me. 2 Lest they tear my soul like a lion, rending it in pieces, because there is none to deliver. 3 Dear Jehovah my God, if I have done this. If there be iniquity in my hands. 4 If I have given evil to him who was at peace with me; Yes, if I have destroyed him, without a cause who is my adversary. 5 Then let the enemy pursue my soul, and overtake it. Yes, let him tread my life down to the ground and lay my glory in the dust. 6 Arise, great Jehovah, in your anger. Lift up yourself against the rage of my adversaries, awaken for me; you who have commanded judgment. 7 Let the congregating people compass around you; and may you return on high over them. 8 Jehovah, minister judgment to the people: Stop and mediate, praise him who lives forever. Judge me, great Jehovah, according to my righteousness, and my integrity, found in me. 9 But let the wickedness of the wicked come to an end, however you will establish the righteous. For the righteous God tries the minds and hearts. 10 My shield is with God, who saves the upright in heart. 11 God is a righteous judge. Yes, a God of indignation every day. 12 If a man will not return, God will draw his sword; he has bent his bow, and made it ready. 13 He has also prepared for him the instruments of death; he makes his arrows into fiery shafts. 14 Watch, him who travails with iniquity. Yes, he has conceived mischief, and brought forth false lies. 15 He has made a pit, and dug it, and he has fallen into the ditch he made for others. 16 His mischief shall return on his own head, and his violence will come down on his own house. 17 I will give thanks to Jehovah according to his righteousness, I will sing praise to the name of Jehovah Most High.

Psalm 8

Jehovah, our Lord, how excellent is your name in all the earth. You who has set your glory in the heavens! 2 Out of the mouth of babes and young you have established strength, because of your adversaries. So you may still the enemy and the avenger. 3 When I consider your heavens, the work of your hands. The moon and stars, you have created. 4 What is man, that you are mindful of him? The son of man, that you visit with him? 5 For you have made him only a little lower than a god or angel, and crowned him with glory and honor. 6 You made him to have dominion over the works of your hands. You have put all things under his feet: 7 the sheep, oxen, yes, even the beasts of the field, 8 the birds of the sky, fish of the sea, whatever passes through the paths of the seas. 9 Dear Jehovah, our Lord, how excellent is your name in all the earth!

Psalm 9

I will give thanks to Jehovah with my whole heart; I will show all your marvelous works. 2 I will be glad and exalt in you; I will sing praise to your name, great Most High. 3 My enemies will turn back, they stumble and perish at your presence. 4 For you have maintained my right and my cause. You sit on the throne judging righteously. 5 You have rebuked the nations, you have destroyed the wicked; you have blotted out their name for ever and ever. 6 The enemy has come to an end, they are desolate for ever; and the cities you have overthrown, even the memory of them is removed. 7 But Jehovah sits as king for ever. He has prepared his throne for judgment; 8 and he will judge the world in righteousness, he will minister judgment to the people in his uprightness. 9 Jehovah also will be a high tower for the oppressed. A high tower in times of trouble; 10 and they who know your name will put their trust in you. For you, Jehovah, have not forsaken them who seek you. 11 Sing praises to Jehovah, who dwells in Zion. Declare among the people his wonders. 12 The one who questions and tests the blood remembers God’s acts; he does not forget the cry of the poor. 13 Have mercy on me, dear Jehovah; behold my affliction I suffer from them who hate me. You lift me up from the gates of death; 14 so I may demonstrate to all, who see, your praise. In the gates of the daughter of Zion, I will rejoice in your salvation. 15 The nations have sunk down in the pit they made, their own foot is snared in the net they hid. 16 Jehovah has made himself known, he has executed judgment. The wicked is snared in the work of his own hands. 17 The wicked will be turned back to Sheol, all of the nations that forget God. 18 For the needy will not always be forgotten, nor the expectation of the poor fail for ever. 19 Arise, dear Jehovah; do not let man prevail. May the nations be judged in your sight. 20 Put on them great fear, Jehovah: make the nations know they are only mortal mankind.

Psalm 10

Why do you stand so far away, Jehovah? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble? 2 In the pride of the wicked the poor are hotly chased down. Let them be destroyed in their own devices they have conceived. 3 For the wicked boasts his heart's desire, and the covetous renounces, yes, scorns great Jehovah. 4 The wicked, in the pride of his life, says, God will not require anything from me. All his thoughts are, There is no God to fear. 5 The wicked is hard hearted, as are his ways. Your impending judgments, dear God, like the heavens, are far above his sight. As for all his adversaries, he sneers at them. 6 He says in his heart, I can’t be moved; for all my life I will not know trouble. 7 His mouth is full of cursing and deceit. Oppression comes from under his tongue, as does mischief and iniquity. 8 He stalks in the lurking places of the villages; in the secret places he plots and murders the innocent. His eyes are secretly set against the helpless. 9 He prowls in secret as a lion in cover; He lays in wait to catch the unsuspecting poor: He catches the poor by drawing him into his net. 10 He crouches and creeps, and the helpless fall by his strength. 11 He says in his heart, God has forgotten; God is far away out of sight, he will never know us. 12 Arise, great Jehovah; dear God, lift up your hand. Do not forget the weak and poor. 13 Why should you allow the wicked to scorn God? To say in his heart, God will not judge me! 14 You have seen him; for you see mischief and spite. You return to them for their actions with your hand: The helpless commits his ways in trust to you. You are the helper of the fatherless. 15 May you break the arm of the wicked. Sift the evil man, seek out his wickedness until none remains. 16 Jehovah is King for ever and ever. The nations perish out of his land. 17 Jehovah, you have heard the desire of the meek: you prepare their heart, you cause your ear to hear; 18 so that you can protect the fatherless and the oppressed. In this way then, man who is of the earth may be terrible no more.

Psalm 11

In Jehovah alone I will take refuge: How can you say to my soul, Flee like a bird to your mountain. 2 The wicked bend their bow, They prepare their arrow on the string to strike, so they may shoot in darkness against the upright in heart. 3 If the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do? 4 Jehovah is in his holy temple; Jehovah has his throne in heaven. His eyes see, his eyelids search the heart of the children of men. 5 Jehovah searches the hearts of the righteous; but the wicked man who loves violence, God’s soul loathes. 6 On the wicked he will rain down snares. Fire and brimstone, and burning wind will be the portion of their cup to drink. 7 For Jehovah is righteous; he loves righteousness: The upright will see his face.

Psalm 12

Help, Jehovah; for the godly man has ceased to be; the faithful fail from among the children of men. 2 They speak falsehood every one to his neighbor. With flattering lips, and a deceitful heart, they speak lies. 3 Jehovah will cut off all flattering lips. Their tongues speaks great things. 4 They boast, With our tongue will we prevail; our lips and speech are our own. Who is mighty enough to be a lord over us? 5 God sees the oppression of the poor, because of the sighing of the needy, God states, Now I will arise. I will set the godly man in the safety he pants for. 6 The words of Jehovah are pure words; as silver is tried in a furnace on the earth, purified seven times. 7 You will keep your words, dear Jehovah. You will preserve your decrees from this generation for ever. 8 The wicked walk around us on every side, when vileness is exalted among the sons of men.

Psalm 13

How long, great Jehovah? Will you forget me for ever? How long will you hide your face from me? 2 How long must I take counsel in my soul, sinking in sorrow in my heart all the day? How long will my enemy be exalted over me? 3 Consider and answer me, Jehovah my God. Enlighten my eyes, if you do not I will sleep the sleep of death. 4 Then my enemy will say, I have prevailed against him; then my adversaries will rejoice when I am gone. 5 But I have trusted in your lovingkindness; my heart has rejoiced in your salvation. 6 I will sing to Jehovah, to me he has dealt generously.

Psalm 14

The fool has said in his heart, There is no God. These fools are corrupt, they have done abominable works; there is none who does good. 2 Jehovah looked down from heaven at the children of men, to see if any could understand? If any seek after God? 3 The people are all gone astray; they are altogether completely filthy. There is none of them who does any good, no, not one. 4 Have all the workers of iniquity no understanding, discernment, or knowledge? Those who consume my people as they eat up bread, and never call on the name of Jehovah? 5 The weak live in great fear; but God is with the righteous. 6 You put to shame the adversary of the poor, Jehovah is his refuge. 7 If only the salvation of Israel was with us from out of Zion! When Jehovah releases us and brings us out of captivity. Then Jacob would rejoice, and Israel would be glad.

Psalm 15

Jehovah, who can abide in your tabernacle? Who can dwell in your holy hill? 2 He who walks upright, and lives righteously, who speaks the truth in his heart. 3 He who does not slander with the tongue, nor perform evil against a friend, who does not disgrace his neighbor; 4 In his eyes a sinner is despised, he honors them who reverently fear and worship Jehovah. This man swears even to his own hurt, and does not draw back from his promise. 5 He does not lend out his money at interest, or receive reward against the innocent. He who lives in these ways can never be moved.

Psalm 16

Preserve me, dear God; for in you do I seek refuge. 2 My soul, you have said to Jehovah, You are my Lord: I have nothing else good beyond you. 3 As for the saints who are walking among us, they are the excellent in the earth, of whom I delight. 4 Sorrows will be multiplied to those who give gifts to another god. Their drink offerings of blood I will not partake in, nor utter their names with my lips. 5 Jehovah is the portion of my inheritance and my cup. You maintain me. 6 The boundary lines are drawn out for me in pleasant places; yes, I have a good heritage with you. 7 I will bless Jehovah, he has given me guidance, my heart instructs me in the night watch. 8 I have set Jehovah always before me, he is at my right hand, because of him, I will not be moved. 9 Therefore my heart is glad, my glory rejoices, and my flesh dwells in safety. 10 For you will not leave my soul to Sheol; neither will you suffer your holy one to see corruption. 11 You will show me the path of life: in your presence is fulness of joy. At your right hand are pleasures for evermore.

Psalm 17

Hear the righteous, great Jehovah, attend to my cry. Listen to my prayer, that does not go out from pretentious lips. 2 May my sentences proceed forth from your presence; let your eyes look on me with fairness. 3 You have tested and proven my heart; you visit me in the night. You have tried me, and found nothing against me; I am determined in purpose, my mouth does not transgress. 4 As for the works of men, by the word of your lips, I keep myself from the acts of the violent. 5 My steps have stayed close to your paths, and my feet haven’t slipped. 6 I call on you, for you answer me, great God. Incline your ear to me, and hear my speech. 7 Show your marvelous lovingkindness. You save by your right hand all those who take refuge in you, they run to you from those who rise up against them. 8 Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me under the shadow of your wings, 9 from the wicked who oppress me. My deadly enemies, are all around me. 10 They are enclosed by their own words: with their mouth they speak proudly. 11 They have surrounded us as we walk. They are determined to cast us down to the earth. 12 The stalker is like a lion, greedy for his prey, as a young lion who lurks in secret places. 13 Arise, Jehovah, confront him, cast him down. Deliver my soul from the wicked by your mighty sword; 14 by your hand from men. Jehovah, deliver my soul from men of this world, whose portion is in this life, and whose stomach is filled with the earth’s provision. They are satisfied with children, and leave the rest of their substance to their young. 15 As for me, I will behold your face in righteousness; I will be satisfied, when I awake, with beholding your form.
